Tour du Knee Written on May 16, 2009, by annaf.
Monday last week I visited a specialist knee doctor about the annoying pain that I have had since September last year. I have still been able to run but there is always some pain and it hasn’t allowed me to run up steep hills or to run a bit faster (a problem when I am a mountain runner). So he said he wanted to have a look in there and booked me in for a knee arthroscopy for early June. Well the next day the hospital called me to say there had been someone cancel for Thursday…yikes that was quick. So in I went…and out again all in a couple of hours.
Dr Dai Rees (Paula Radcliff’s Doctor) went in and found a pretty good knee but also found a Plica – a synovial flap that de
velops in early fetal stages and usually disappears by the time we are born but in some people it remains. It doesn’t always give people grief but if it gets irritated by a knock, bang or just training a lot and hard (in mycase) it gets inflamed andirritates the joint and the best way forward it just to chop it out!

Done! Just like that. I now have a clean but fat knee that I am hobbling around on. I will be following an intensive rehab programme through the hospital physiotherapists and also with my team physio Andy Walling and have been told I will probably be racing by the end of July…yippee.
But for now I will stay pumped up to the eye balls on antiflams and painkillers.
